Our Story

Andrew & Di

Exploring the small wonders of the underwater world together.

Divers, travellers, photographers and the founders of MacroDivers. Sharing underwater adventures, macro photography and the remarkable marine life we discover around the world.

How MacroDivers Began

From a dive trip to a shared project.

MacroDivers was created by Andrew Grundy and Di Syrett to share a passion for underwater macro photography, dive travel and marine life identification.

Andrew and Di both lost their partners in the early 2020s and later met on a Blue Ocean Diving trip to the Philippines. What began as a shared love of diving soon became a partnership built around travel, photography, exploration and a fascination with the tiny creatures many divers swim straight past.

Together they have travelled to Mozambique, Raja Ampat, Ambon and Anilao, with Lembeh Strait planned as a major future trip. The site has a strong focus on the Coral Triangle, while also covering other tropical dive locations around the world.

About Andrew

Diver, instructor, photographer and responder.

Andrew is a PADI Master Instructor, PADI Freediving Instructor and Emergency First Response Instructor with more than 25 years of diving experience. He is also a technical diver and recreational CCR diver.

After a long international career in banking and IT management, Andrew now devotes much of his time to diving, underwater photography, travel and volunteering as a British Red Cross Emergency Responder and BDMLR medic.

His interest in MacroDivers is practical as well as creative: sharing useful camera guidance, destination experience and real world diving knowledge to help others discover the remarkable marine life hidden beneath the surface.

About Di

Nudibranch enthusiast and macro spotter.

Di was initially reluctant to dive, as she was never particularly comfortable in the water. Encouraged by her husband Trevor, she began diving in 1992, completing the PADI Open Water certification in Belize and later qualifying as a Divemaster in Egypt in 1997.

Diving was a major part of their lives, with regular dive trips focused mainly on the Coral Triangle. Over time they developed a passion for nudibranchs and the extraordinary diversity of underwater macro life.

Di’s enthusiasm for nudibranchs and her talent for spotting small, unusual creatures is one of the driving forces behind MacroDivers including the nudibranch database designed to help divers identify and appreciate the small wonders of the underwater world.

Future Plans

Where MacroDivers is heading.

The first phase of MacroDivers is about building a strong photographic archive, destination pages and practical underwater photography guides, especially around the OM System Tough TG-7 and Backscatter Mini Flash 2.

The second phase is to grow the site into a useful nudibranch identification resource, with species pages, comparison images, location notes and ID confidence.

Diving Ahead

Coral Triangle and beyond.

Our future diving plans will continue to focus heavily on the Coral Triangle, including Lembeh Strait, Anilao, Ambon and Raja Ampat, while also exploring other tropical dive destinations.

The aim is to keep adding photographs, stories, camera settings, dive notes and species information so MacroDivers becomes both a personal archive and a useful reference for other divers and underwater photographers.
